Sea moss, honestly
We work with a lot of sea moss. We also see a lot of bad sea moss. Here's how to tell the difference — and what it actually does.
What it is
It's wildcrafted sea moss. We harvest from Honduras, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and Maine. Real wildcrafted sea moss is sun-dried on rocks, salty, gold-to-purple, and looks like something the ocean made.
When you rehydrate it, it should smell faintly of the sea — clean, mineral. Not nothing. Not bleach. The sea.
What pool-grown looks like
Pale, uniform, fluffy, sometimes bleached white. It's grown in tanks, fed industrial nutrients, and missing most of the trace minerals that make real sea moss worth taking. If it looks like sterile foam, it is.
The market is flooded with this stuff because it's cheap to produce. Tank-grown sea moss is also one of the easier wellness products to commit fraud on — color it, dry it, package it as wildcrafted. We've seen it.
What it does
Mineralization is the headline. Sea moss carries 92 of the 102 trace minerals the human body uses. We use it as the foundation layer of every long protocol — it makes other herbs work better and prevents the depletion that causes cleanse fatigue.
It also coats the gut lining (the mucilage), which is why it can soothe people who can't tolerate a lot of harsher herbs. If you have a reactive gut, sea moss is often the gentlest first move.
How we use it
1 tablespoon of gel daily, in warm water or in a smoothie. More than that isn't more useful — the body takes what it takes and dumps the rest.
Making gel from raw dried sea moss: rinse it well (twice), soak in spring water for 24 hours, blend with the soak water until smooth. Refrigerate. Lasts three weeks.
Who shouldn't take it
If you have hyperthyroid (Graves'), be cautious — the iodine content can push the thyroid further. Talk to a practitioner first. Same goes for anyone on thyroid medication; the iodine can interact with how the medication doses.
For everyone else, daily use is generally safe and gentle.
